Nerantzi Mitropoulos comes to winemaking as a descendant of generations of farmers, first and foremost. He is firmly in the 'locavore' camp, propagating old local varieties, using native yeasts, and using local Balkan oak for their barrels. All this is in the name of fully expressing what is unique about this area of northern Greece, in the foothills of Mount Menoikio. What is especially unique is the shards of ancient pottery that he has found in the vineyard soil, making his wines a living connection to the past civilization that gave us so many of our present day wine traditions. His daughter Eva has now joined him on their 15 hectare organic estate after studying oenology at the University of Dijon.
Their Assyrtiko is fermented and aged in steel and shows off a more textural side of the variety. Honeyed, ripe, and spiced apple notes with some grippy skin tannins, it could be easily mistaken for Chenin Blanc. There is some power to the wine, clocking in at 14% abv, but it is nicely integrated and layered. Serve it with a bacon-wrapped langoustine topped with Greek yogurt. Nothing less will do.
