From winemaker Pete Bloomberg:
Truth be told, I'm not really a big fan of Pinot Noir, or at least not a fan of Pinot Noir with a typical pedigree. If I must drink it, give me the outliers: frigid, coastal California, Spätburgunder or Alsace. Despite my general disinterest in it, Pinot seems to be interested in me. It is everywhere in California and seems to fall into my lap annually. My close, aforementioned friend David called me last year with extra Pinot Noir from Petaluma Gap that he needed help with. I happily obliged, as I had helped him with some vineyard work at the site and knew the beautiful exposition - about as close as you can get to San Pablo Bay without the ground being suffocated by salt, surrounded by dairies and rangeland, hilly and windy with soft sunlight.
When I brought it to the winery, I foot-tread all of it, then pressed the majority a few hours later after it picked up a peachy hue. The rose that wasn't blended with SB was put on top of whole clusters, so this wine is about 1/3 whole clusters with 2/3 juice. This macerated
for a week, then pressed and moved into large-format barrels until it was bottled in
early spring. Tonally it's light and delicate, with concentrated brambly qualities and a
touch of green freshness. There's the woody, foresty reduction of good sea-influenced
California Pinot Noir, with a big kiss of needed salt.
tl;dr: Petaluma Gap Pinot Noir, verging on rosato. Pink Lemonade. Cherry
blossoms and salt. Pine Tar. The first rain after a dry season.
