From younger vines in the Vinschgau Sonnenberg vineyard, all on gneiss. This is fermented in steel with a pied de cuve, aged in concrete tank. Sulfur adding only during fermentation. Bone dry with ripping acid, but not austere – just invigorating. Notes of lime, snow melt, and wet rocks. I paired this with a sausage and broccoli rabe risotto and can't wait to do that again. 

The Unterortl vineyards are planted from 2,000 to 2,800 feet above sea level in Italy's Alps, near Naturno in South Tyrol. They surround a castle built in 1278 that has been owned by Reinhold Messner since 1983. Messner is one of the world's most famous extreme mountaineers, the first to solo climb Mt. Everest and the first to summit Everest without supplementary oxygen. This site is also where the remains of Ötzi the Ice Man were found. He is the oldest natural mummy ever found, and he lived from 3275 BC to 3230 BC.

Some 5,000 years after Ötzi's untimely demise, Raphael and Christine Burki started leasing the vineyards from the Messner family and making the Castel Juval Unterortl wines. They work about 4.3 hectares, with figs, quince, apples, and wild herbs as well as vines. They are certified organic and qualify as heroic, meaning the steepness and altitude are some of the most challenging to work in the world of wine. The vines are forced to work their roots into the gneiss bedrock for water, and this among other struggles add to the taut energy and tension in the wines. Jonathan Kemp

Brooklyn delivery is $19, or free for orders over $250.

Manhattan and Queens delivery is $25, or free for orders over $320.

For our local customers (within 0.5 miles of our shop) orders over $95 qualify for free delivery. 

An adult over the age of 21 must be present to receive and sign for all deliveries (front desk attendants and doormen qualify but may be asked for ID). 

For wine delivery outside of New York we ship via common carrier. Direct Press wine club shipments are free to members.

We currently do not ship wine to the following states: AL, AR, CO, DE, GA, HI, IA, KS, KY, NC, MD, MS, MT, OK, PA, SD, UT, VT, WI. As statutory laws are constantly changing, please note that this list is updated frequently, and acceptance of an order does not guarantee that we will ultimately be able to ship wine to you.
