I first met Claire in France on a trip with the Louis/Dressner team. We found out we had a bunch of friends in common, and that we both make a little wine on the side. Needless to say, she and I hit it off and have remained good friends. I first tasted her wines 2 years ago and was blown away, and now that our friends at Selection Massale are selling her wines in New York we couldn't resist grabbing some of these fantastic bottles for the club.
Del Barba vineyard was planted in the early 1900's, and the vines have grown into near-trees. These super old vines have extremely deep roots, allowing them to tap into the local watershed, and are adapted well to drought situations that have plagued California for the last few vintages. Picked at perfect ripeness, fermented in open top containers with 25% whole cluster and aged in old oak.
Not often am I be convinced of that California Mourvèdre can rival Bandol, but this wine has done just that. The nose is brambly and slightly floral with violet and rose. The full-bodied palate is dominated by the blackberry and plum, with a bit of savory, meaty depth. A fantastically long finish is backed by refreshing acidity, that keeps you coming back for more. We are so excited to be one of the first shops in NYC to offer Claire's wines and cannot wait to what she has in store next!
