An extremely exciting new project in the Pfalz that is a true outlier in Germany. The three Seckinger brothers are taking their cues from Jura and Chablis more than classic German whites, especially with their use of oxidative techniques. Kieselberg is a plot of 60 year-old ungrafted vines on red sandstone. It's on a high, sun drenched plateau, but they manage to make a Riesling with subdued intensity and filigree where many would go for opulence and power. Bruised apple notes, lots of finely etched details, and chewy layers of minerals and acid. This is Riesling for fans of Savagnin and Chenin. Jonathan Kemp
