Folias de Baco "Uivo Curtido" 2021

Tiago Sampaio has been making waves in the Douro since 2007, breathing new life into Portuguese wine scene. Up until tasting the Folias de Baco wines, I had associated the Douro with big, extracted reds and rich, low-acid whites. Tiago's wines opened my mind to the fact that there is potential for high-toned, refreshing wines, you just have to grow the grapes in the right place. With vines in the Alto Douro, planted at elevations exceeding 700 meters above sea level, Tiago is able to capture energy and vibrancy like no other winemaker in Portugal I've come across. His projects are always evolving, and each year is seems like he has an exciting new wine on the market, he's also been hugely influential with inspiring a new wave of young and innovative winemakers.
Curtido is definitely one of the most noteworthy wines from the Uivo line up each year - a tart, refreshing orange wine that has come to somewhat define the category. 100% Moscatel Galego given around 4 months of skin maceration, done gently and never to exact too much tannin or color. The wine is beautifully aromatic, floral and enticing, with notes of lychee, green papaya and tangelo. The finish is long and salty, keeping you coming back for more.
