Georg Schmelzer comes from a long line of winemakers in the Gols region of Austria near Lake Neusiedl. He works organically and biodynamically, utilising traditional methods like horn manure and herbal teas to promote soil health, vine strength, and metabolism. He also harvests by hand and ages the wines in neutral oak barrel without filtering, fining, or adding any sulfur.
His bottling of Weissburgunder comes from vines planted on gravel, sand, and chalk. The grapes are macerated for 24 hours and spontaneously fermented in oak barrels with indigenous yeasts.
This Weissburgunder is very generous and supple with notes of ginger, preserved peaches, lemon custard, and a dose of fresh earth to balance it all out. This wine would make an excellent pairing for Vietnamese food, chicken sandwiches, or anything with a kick. Jeremy Hernandez
