Sanzon (pronounced Sh-anzon in Hungarian) is a tiny 2.5 hectare winery founded by Erika Racz in the village of Erdőbénye in the heart of the Tokaj region of Hungary. Erika started the estate with a small parcel inherited from her parents in 2014. Erika now has 5 vineyard sites and only makes wine from Furmint, Hárslevelű, Muscat with minimal interventions.
Sanzon’s "Classic" Furmint comes from her certified organic Palánkos vineyard planted on volcanic and mostly rhyolite soil. The grapes are whole cluster pressed and fermented with native yeasts in old 500 L Hungarian oak barrels. The wine is aged on fine lees for 10 months in the same large barrels. This yields an intoxicating leesy big wine that is perfect for the winter months. The wine smells of bees wax and honey, white flowers, lemongrass, quince, and lemon life savers. The palate is both complex and supple while balancing tension between ripe quince, deeper leesy clotted cream notes and a solid back bone of stony, salty, flinty minerality. Jeremy Hernandez
