The Lilandian plain has been a prized site for grain and grapes since at least 710 BC, when the Greek city-states of Chalcis and Eretria waged a war for control of the fertile land. Thousands of years later, vignerons like Nikos Mitzifiris are still crafting beautifully expressive wines on its sandy clay soils.
An early adherent of natural winemaking, Mitzifiris has been certified organic for more than 20 years and has never used additives or commercial yeast in his cellar. His vineyards on Evia, Greece’s second-largest island after Crete, enjoy a Mediterranean climate and breezes from a nearby branch of the Aegean. He planted his first vines in 1991 and focuses on native Greek varieties including Savatiano, Agiorgitiko, and Vradiano, a rare black grape seldom found outside Evia.
The Lilas Gray Skin Contact is a 50/50 blend of gray-skinned grapes Roditis and Moschofilero, the latter of which is highly aromatic. That’s obvious from the wine’s nose, a vibrant blend of apricot, peach, guava, and passion fruit combined with delicate yellow blossoms. All those intense and concentrated aromas are freshened by a touch of black tea on the palate and still-impressive acidity, making this a deceptively food-friendly wine. Try it with scallops, souvlaki, or anything with goat cheese. Kate Masters
