Some of the earliest evidence of winemaking in Ancient Greece comes from the Minoans living on Crete, who were putting wine in clay amphora that have been dated as far back as 2200 BCE. They were responsible for the wine trade and the start of many of the traditions that are still in place today. Crete still produces about 20% of all Greek wine.
Despite the heat and dry climate, Giannis Stilianou has learned to work his three hectares of vines without irrigation or any kind of chemical spraying. He only works with grape varieties native to Crete, such as Mandalari, a rustic and challenging grape with both red skin and red flesh. He does a quick maceration and gentle pressing to keep it light and chillable. Fermented and aged in steel with only a small addition of sulfur. Cherry and cranberry notes with dusty, grippy texture make for a soulful, refreshing, and interesting expression of this distinct and cantankerous Cretan grape. Giannis named it "Great Mother" after the Ancient Minoan matriarchal earth goddess. Jonathan Kemp
