With vines planted on stunningly steep slopes in South Styria’s Sausal Mountains, Michi Lorenz has the terroir and the natural winemaking bona fides (e.g. Demeter certification, 100% hand-harvesting, minimal sulfur ) to produce lovely bottles at a great value. Luckily for us, that’s exactly what he’s doing.
His “Wicked Garden,” to put it simply, absolutely rips. A blend of Pinot Noir, Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc with two to four days of skin contact, the bottle opens with a touch of moody smokiness courtesy of the region’s schist-based soils. Then it’s nothing but spicy citrus and perfumed blossoms with a touch of tropical fruit — think yuzu, lime, guava, passionfruit and the heady aroma of jasmine. With its textural body and long, fragrant finish, it’s begging to be paired with prawn risotto or your favorite Vietnamese takeout. Kate Masters
