A stunning, "wow-factor" rosé Champagne from Benoit Marguet. Vivacious raspberry is paired with a stony cut and great acidity. The secret is that it's mostly Chardonnay, with roughly 1/3 Pinot Noir. Benoit does his blending in opaque tasting glasses so he isn't influenced by color, only the taste. Fermentation and elevage in neutral oak. His rougly 10 hectares of vines in Ambonnay and Bouzy are farmed biodynamically and plowed only with horses. While Marguet is one of the most 'natural' winemakers in all of Champagne—with a collection of crystals to prove it—his wines don't read as funky, just as inspired and full of energy. Jonathan Kemp
