Recently I've noticed that a lot of the wines I felt were overachieving were from one importer: José Pastor and his Llaurador Wines imprint. Primarily they work with Spanish wines but they also cover Chile, Argentina, Bolivia, Mexico, the US, Japan, and now Portugal.
We've featured many of the Llaurador wines in Direct Press, including Cati Ribot, Mingaco, La Rural, and La Senda — in 2024 alone. Goyo Garcia Viadero, Oriol Artigas, Alice l’Estrange, 4 Monos, Curii, Ca N’Estruc, Dolores Cabrera, Chodin Param, Gustavo Riffo, Laura Lorenzo, and others have been featured as well. You are probably familiar with the Canary Island wines of Envínate or the Mexican wines of Bichi. Both are included this month as wines that are sought-after, hugely influential, and far more recognizable than the name José Pastor. José is a bit elusive; his wines are not. That is by design. He sees them as the heroes and doesn’t want to be a distraction.
Though we talk about winemakers and farming, we haven't talked as much about a very important tier of the wine world: importing. So I spoke with the José Pastor team to learn more about this side of the business and how they have assembled such a dynamic portfolio of growers and winemakers.
Read all about it in this month's Direct Press 'zine!
Cheers,
Jonathan, Jeremy, Kate, Nico, Eddy, and Greg
