A Bigger Splash: Seaside Wines

In case you haven't noticed, it is cold in NYC. January has heralded polar vortexes and yet another four years of political degeneration; I doubt I’m the only person dreaming of an escape. Hence our February theme, seaside wines. Why live in the moment when you can curl up in front of the TV, drinking a rosé (and here I’m speaking specifically of Mas Mellet’s “La Soif des Salines,” Press 4 - Reds) that’s brimming with salinity and helps you imagine you’re vacationing in the south of France?

But escapism isn’t the only reason why I wanted to go coastal for February’s Direct Press. Exploring the relationship between wine and the sea is also a chance to appreciate the very origins of viticulture. Early archaeological evidence suggests it emerged more than 8,000 years ago in the South Caucasus, a part of the world that includes modern-day Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan. Waterways, including the Black Sea, were crucial for disseminating wine — and winemaking knowledge — through Turkey and into the Mediterranean basin.

You can read more about that history, and the rest of our coastal selections, in the Direct Press 'zine!

Cheers,
Kate, Jonathan, Jeremy, and Greg
