We’ve featured more than a few Catalan stand-outs on these pages, and we’re adding another to the list.
Brothers Andreu and Xavi Padró started making wine under the name LaRuraL in 2018. Their folks have grown grapes for decades, but never sold their own wine. The vibrant Catalan natural wine scene along with inspiration and support from the likes of Oriol Artigas helped the boys take the leap and leave their careers in architecture and mechanics and devote themselves to wine growing.
Now, they work in the basement of the family house, with stainless steel tanks, some barrels, and short, infusion-style macerations. Their wines have energy, yet still show Mediterranean ripeness and herby tonality.
This particular wine is 95% Ull de Llebre (Catalan name for Tempranillo) and 5% Malvasia de Sitges (one of the many variations of this amazing variety). It shows its ripe fruit with a tinge of orange rind and an Ethiopian coffee-like florality and snap. Tannins are fine and give this wine a layered, herbed, savory tone. Bruno Sant'ana
