This wine wins the highest altitude award for our Italian Mountain Wine club. Fourth-generation winemaker Matteo Furlani works with tiny parcels at elevations about 700 meters, or 2300 feet above sea level. His family never used pestcides or synthetic chemicals in their farming but Matteo went further by using Biodynamic practices. He uses no temperature control or any additives, including sulfur. He clarifies his wines by racking them into glass demijohns and sitting them out in the snow.
The "Bianco Alpino" is a blend of Nosiola — a grape almost never seen outside Alto Adige — with Pinot Bianco and Müller-Thurgau. This wine is a bottle of supreme mountain refreshment. Ripping acid with some Alpine flower notes and a bit of stony texture. Nosiola, which may be named for its hazelnutty flavor, adds just a bit of complexity. But overall this is a zappy, thirst-quenching wine for hot weather. Zero sulfur added. [Jonathan Kemp, June 2021]
