Chiara Vigo returned to her family's estate after presenting her graduate art school thesis on Wine Labels. Who knew you could get a Master's Degree in wine labels? The 14 hectare estate is truly something to behold - surrounded by an almost 20 foot tall wall of petrified lava, a remnant of the Etna's devastating 1981 eruption. Thankfully, the over 100 year old vineyard that goes into the flagship Vigo bottling was spared. Famed enologist Salvo Foti was the initial winemaker when Chiara first took over, and today, the estate produces Nerello Mascalese based wines influenced by Foti's I Vigneri philosophy, harkening back to the historic style Etna was known for centuries ago.
Vigo is a "riserva" style bottling, made only in the best vintages, and as 2016 had a lovely growing season free of the previous years hail and mildew, it was the perfect year to make this wine. Fermented in stainless steel and aged in old French oak barrels for 14 months before being bottled unfined, unfiltered and with just a small addition of sulfur. The wine really showcases Nerello Mascalese's commonality with Nebbiolo, with cherry and rose petal focused nose and pronounced tannic structure. Cigar smoke and dried cherry dominates the palate, with redcurrant, mushroom and leather leading the secondary tones. It tastes like what I imagine lava tastes like, and I think lava might be delicious...
