Valtellina, located in the northernmost edge of Lombardy on the border of Switzerland, is home to the highest elevation, coolest climate vineyards that grow Nebbiolo in all of Italy. Locally know as Chiavennasca, Nebbiolo from Valtellina is lighter in body and less tannic than the more famous iterations from Barolo and Barbaresco. ARPEPE (short for Arturo Pelizzatti Perego) is widely regarded as the top producer in the region and can trace their roots back to the 1860's
Il Pettirosso is the estates Superiore bottling made from 50-100 year old vines across the domaines holdings. The grapes grow at elevations between 400 and 550 meters elevation, farmed organically and are hand harvested. All fruit is destemmed and undergo a 100-day maceration in large, untoasted oak casks and is then aged in barrel for 1 year and in bottle for an additional 2 years in bottle before release.
An elegant, ethereal expression of Nebbiolo. At just 13% alcohol, this is a lot of wine. A stunning nose of pomegranate, rose, sandalwood and bergamot. The medium palate has more in common with Burgundy than Barolo in terms of weight, but the purity of cherry fruit is all Nebbiolo. Citrus-tinged acidity matched by juicy berry fruit compliment the long, earthy finish. A stellar bottle of wine.
