Get ready to taste California Chenin Blanc, Colombard, Nero d'Avola, Mourvedre, Carignan, Syrah, and the obscure Abouriou, in addition to more obvious varieties like Chardonnay, Merlot, and Zinfandel — that have been re-imagined and revitalized in the hands of winemakers Martha Stoumen, Claire Hill, and Darek Trowbridge.

It all takes place in our newly expanded (almost-finished) store, 573 Vanderbilt Ave in Prospect Heights, Brooklyn.

Martha Stoumen, Claire Hill, and Darek Trowbridge span nearly three generations and have their own distinct styles, but they are all making wines that are in opposition to what we on the East Coast too often assume about California wines.

Martha Stoumen is one of the most recognizable faces of natural wine in California, and wines like her 'Post Flirtation' series have introduced people to the lively, thirst-quenching potential of California wines like few others. Her time working at COS in Sicily has led to her making a case for the potential of grapes like Nero d'Avola in California.

Claire Hill has worked with Martha Stoumen as well as some of the most well-regarded Santa Cruz mountain wineries like Rhys and Mount Eden; she's also worked with (in)famous Rhône Valley renegade Eric Texier. Her wines are marked by a remarkable sense of balance, poise, and age-worthy elegance. As such, she has been featured in our Direct Press wine club and is an emerging talent we are completely enamored with and can't wait to introduce to more people.

Darek Trowbridge of Old World Winery has been making some of the most subversive wines in California for over 20 years, many from organic, no-till vineyards planted by his great-grandfather as far back as the 1890s. He has an extensive knowledge of Sonoma vineyards and natural farming, and talking with Darek has helped me really understand the context and history of winemaking in not just Sonoma but the U.S. in general.
