The name COZs is taken from his winery. After a few vintages they acquired some more parcels in the Montejunto mountain range , a protected natural reserve less than 10 miles from the ocean that is dotted sporadically with vineyards.

The ocean recently wreaked havoc on Portugal, as Storm Kristin hit in January with 202 kmh winds that blew off Antonio's cellar roof. In addition to widespread property damage, there was severe flooding, landslides, power outages for millions of people, and major crime outfits looting entire towns of auto parts, sneakers, and anything they can get their hands on. Much of the worst was in Leira, where Antonio lives. It's been missed in our own chaotic news cycle but it has been traumatic for Antonio, Tiago, and much of Portugal. Luckily Antonio and Tiago were able to keep their plan of visiting NYC, and we are ready to give them a warm welcome.

We'll be featuring some of the spectacular new batch of COZs along with a few of the Serradinha wines.

Each ticket is $75 and includes:

1 hour class and Q&A with winemakers Tiago Teles and Antonio Marques-da-Cruz in an intimate setting

Tasting sessions of 4-5 wines during the class

Pizza prepared by our friends at Simó

Event will take place Wednesday, March 18th from 6:00-8:30pm at our shop, 573 Vanderbilt Ave, Brooklyn NY

Antonio and Tiago are some of the most earnest and thoughtful winemakers I've had the pleasure of meeting, both in the vineyard and in the cellar. The Porter Creek wines both defy and surpass expectations of this famous California appellation. Alex's father George bought the vines in 1977 and, fortunately for us, was not a trend follower. Alex took over the winery in 1997 after working for Christophe Roumier and Marcel Guigal. Alex got the vineyard certified biodynamic by Demeter in 2003, though he now farms the same way without certification.

Porter Creek is like a snapshot from Pinot's past… The approach Davis takes is the opposite of the modern style; it's nuanced, pure in its fruit and informed by his time in some of Burgundy's greatest cellars. They have a gravitas and depth that is slightly apart from both the glou-glou natural wine scene and the overly manipulated spoof of Robert Parker's followers. Instead they are earnest expressions of Russian River Valley Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. They are luxe, they are complex, they are soulful. It's a rare chance to speak with a California winemaker who is more along the lines of a French vigneron, owning the land, farming the vines, and making the wine. It should be a memorable evening.

Direct Press members can use the code DIRECTPRESSMEMBER to get discounted tickets.
