Pheasant's Tears Saperavi 2020

Started by John Wurdeman and Gela Patalishvili in 2007, Pheasant's Tears is one of the larger natural wineries in Georgia. These grapes are sourced from their vineyards in the village of Tibaani in the Kakheti wine region.
Like everything from Pheasant’s Tears, the Saperavi is fermented and aged in qvevri – some of which date back to the 19th century. Stems, skins, juice, and pits all go in together giving it a dark crunchy tannic structure rounded out with notes of currants and beets. It is deliciously deep and almost bloody with a lifting tart acidity. Earthen and rustic, but not too wild. Pair with grilled meats or hearty veg. [Cara Conaboy April 2022]
Pheasant's Tears is a standard-bearer of authentically rustic Georgian 'qvevri' wines. The 2020 vintage is the most elegant and lovely vintage I've had. Less funk, more nuance. This Saperavi is closer to a bright, crunchy Carignan than it is to many of the black, tooth-staining, 15%-abv Saperavis that are more common in Georgia. At only 12% it's herbaceous, finessed, and earthy, with blackberry, cranberry, pomegranate, and deep, feral notes. Regardless of whether you've had Saperavi or Pheasant's Tears before, this vintage will expand your opinion of both. I've tasted this several times now and I'm all about it.
