It's a region that is a crossroads of culture, changing hands politically from the Hungarians, Austrians, Ottomans, Czechoslovakians, Nazis, and Communists until their independence in 1989. In some ways it's not surprising so many have fought over this territory, with it's lush, rolling slopes and vineyards that are tempered by the Danube River and its surrounding marshlands. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eZsolt's philosophy is centered around the trust and faith that is needed to make wine without sulfur. “I had a barrel that was borderline flawed, I felt it coming,\" he says. I also knew that a tiny bit of SO2 would spare me the risk; but if I added it, I’d never know the eventual outcome – maybe the wine would manage to take care of itself. In the end, I think this search for truth is my ultimate fuel. A non vintage blend of Alibernet (a cross between Alicante Henri Bouschet and Cabernet Sauvignon), Dunaj (cross of Blauer Potugieser and Sankt Laurent), and Portugieser, from 2021 and 2022. It's a juicy, grippy red with blueberry, violet, and peppercorns. The soils are granitic and the parcel is close to the Pacific Ocean, with its cooling influence bringing a lifting acid tension to the fruit.  The grapes were harvested by hand and destemmed, then fermented in open-top plastic bins with their skins, then the wine is racked to rest in a stainless steel tank. They have enough structure and heft to gain complexity with bottle age, but they remain humble and understated. This only adds to the beauty and profundity, in my opinion. Wines with this much nuance and mystery are just not found at this price. It speaks to the Loire’s enduring charms for those in the know and to the hard work of the minority of growers who have turned near-backwater appellations like Bourgueil into some of the most interesting in the world for studious wine lovers.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eUpon first opening this wine I was greeted with the familiar aroma of pop-rocks as a sense memory. This speaks to me for most of the red wines I gravitate towards. Something bright, lively, fruit forward, with integrated tannins. This wine has it all plus a bit more complexity. After the initial wave of fruit jumped at me I started to pick up blueberry jam and white pepper on the nose. On the palate I tasted bright purple fruit similar to a ripe plum in summer, followed by a bit of dried rose or lilac, and finishing with a bit of a savory note reminiscent  of a nice onion or shallot. And yet Primož Štoka and his son Tadej manage to make delicious wines on seven hectares of organic vines while raising pigs and cows.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTeran is the local name for Refošk, and Kras Teran had the reputation for the most medicinal properties of all Refošk because of the levels of iron oxide and aluminum found in the soil, which is very red in color. The iron is not hard to detect when you taste the wine, let me tell you. It's dark with cocoa notes and is quite tart, but unlike the Refošk from Istria, this is not highly tannic. It's edgy, with cleansing mineral notes on the finish, and has a lot of energy, which I imagine is the healing part of the wine. So maybe it will give your immune system a boost and help that winter cold, broken leg, or case of measles disappear in a matter of days. Brothers Saul and Benjamin Gil Berzal divide up the winemaking and vineyard management, respectively. They are wines that vividly show off the terroir of this part of Rioja without any of the spoof associated with the region's longstanding use of new American oak. Farming is biodynamic and the winemaking is incredibly astute, resulting in a range of wines. Some capture the power and elegance of the great, ageworthy Riojas.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOthers, like the zero-sulfur \"Buscando\" line, are very provocative for such a staid region, making them very delicious outliers that offer a new way into Rioja by way of its more rustic history of peasant wines. Importer David Cascione says \"It's amazing to think that a producer like Saul asks the question ]what was wine like in my village a century ago?' and New Yorkers get the chance to learn about it before most madrileños [Madrid residents] do.\" As we reflect on what changes lie ahead with trade wars and tariffs, the ability to encourage more winemakers to take chances like this is certainly one of the special things about the NY wine market.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Buscando Garnacha is beautiful wine with blueberry, black cherry, and energetic lift. It's not super heavy but does have some chewy, almost Nebbiolo-like tannin, but the fruit remains finessed and fresh on top, with softer perfumed notes as well. The wine has a taut tension and clarity, ready to drink now.
