100% Cabernet Franc
Vinification Method: The grapes are hand-harvested, brought to the winery by a horse, destemmed and gently pressed. Only natural yeasts are used and the juice undergoes an extended maceration. Aged in old oak barrels.
Ripe and dense Cabernet Franc, this demonstrates the juicier wines that can come from Anjou. As Cab Franc ripens, it sheds the green pepper notes, which are undetectable here. Though there's less barnyard and Brettanomyces than in previous vintages, there's enough there to add some more subtle funk. Aromatically complex, it has wild raspberry, fennel, leather, and dried red pepper flakes. The palate shows off a cherry glaze with tarragon and bee propolis. A lip-smacking rustic edge is giving definition by a crunchy, phenolic texture. Exciting, delicious, and still fresh and finessed enough to chill down and drink on its own, though it will pair really well with summertime grilled fare. Zero sulfur added. [Jonathan Kemp]
