The parcel is planted to heirloom Wente chardonnay clone cuttings taken from Celilo vineyard on Underwood and smaller amounts of Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir. We released a small 600 liter cuvée of very dense Chardonnay from 2016, but the rest of the wines from 2015 from 2020 have now been assembled in a series of 500 liter puncheons to age together. The various vintages represent a kaleidoscope of styles and ways of looking at the site. In some vintages the wine saw extended maceration on the skins, in others it was directly pressed. Some vintages were very fresh, while others showed more salty and oxidative characters. The resulting wine is very deep, shimmering pink in color, with aromas of salted melon and lavender honey. It's no secret that Brianne Day is one of my favorite American winemakers, and I know I am biassed because she's also one of my best friends. But most importantly, she's incredibly talented and makes truly fantastic wines.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBrianne started working with Chardonnay from Belle Pente in 2015. This site holds a very special place in her heart, as Brianne used to work for the owners, \u003cmeta charset=\"utf-8\"\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eBrian \u0026amp; Jill O’Donnell, and she considers them mentors. The 16-acre estate, located in the Yamhill-Carlton AVA, has been thoughtfully farmed since day one, and has been organic since 2000, with biodynamic and regenerative practices being incorporated today. The 2018 rendition of this wine is a serious showstopper - I think it is one of the best wines Brianne has ever made. Fermented in one-third new puncheon and two-thirds neutral barrels, and aged 22 months before bottling. This is serious wine, and truly recalls the reason why the Willamette Valley is mostly planted to Burgundian grape varieties. The nose is decadent, with wildflower honey, ripe pear and sea salt. It's full-bodied, but balanced, with brilliant acidity that livens the palate - packed with juicy tangerine, apricot and green apple. A super long finish with just the right amount of oak makes it very easy to enjoy. Their mission, \u003cmeta charset=\"utf-8\"\u003elike many new-wave American winemakers, is basically to recreate the accessible, thirst-quenching style found in regions like the Loire and Beaujolais: a noble goal, for sure. Ian Atkins found his way to wine after serving in the Army and then working at a restaurant started by his wife and brother-in-law in El Paso. They opened more successful restaurants together and eventually the wine bug called them to Portland, Oregon.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe 'Not Cringey' is a field-blend of Primitivo and Zinfandel, which are essentially just different clones of the same variety. It's sourced from granitic soils in the Connor and Hodge vineyards in southern Oregon's Applegate Valley. Fermented whole-cluster and aged in neutral barrels for 12-15 months, with no additions besides a small addition of sulfur at bottling. It's bursting with fresh cranberry and raspberry and though it's 100% in-line with Ian's 'soif, American style' philosophy, it has serious balance and great layers of crunchy texture. Hints of smoky vanilla and a little black pepper make it particularly grill-friendly but this is a versatile, friendly wine for any setting. Mimi quickly became the face of regenerative agriculture, an approach to farming that works to actively sequester carbon, healing the land and purifying air and soil. Her commitment to this exhaustive modality yielded amazing, highly sought after grapes, producing wines that really turned by head and blew my hair back (yes, I know I'm balding).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e2020 was a year that broke many of our collective hearts. It's was especially difficult in Oregon, where the double gut punch of the Covid-19 pandemic and unprecedented smoke from wildfires made winemaking in the Willamette Valley nearly impossible. Mimi persevered, and made some spine-tingling good white wines. The 2020 Chenin Blanc was the first vintage for wine produced from the estate's Riesling vines grafted over to the notoriously finicky variety and the results were outstanding, but when considering what the year threw at Mimi, the wines should win some damn awards.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Chenin grapes were harvested after the smoke dissipated and were pressed off skins right away, and fermented in neutral french oak. Beautifully ripe, with a nose of mandarin orange and cream. Bright, vibrant acidity lifts the medium-bodied palate up higher than I was initially expecting, creating a lightness to the power this wine has. Nectarine, fleshy pear and wildflower honey notes shine through. Nothing short of breathtaking. Between approximately 15 million and 6 million years ago, these flows spread through the northern Willamette Valley, leaving basalt that would later be exposed on hillsides, and serve as the hallmark for the wines grown in these parts. This nutrient rich soil also retains water very effectively — and a key element for growing grapes without irrigation (dry farming). \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003e“Tear in your Hand” takes its name from Tori Amos’ song in “Little Eathquakes” (if you’re not familiar, \u003c\/span\u003e\u003ca href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/S3F4wofLlSU\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eclick here for a great live performance\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003e), and it is Kirk’s take on a breezy, chillable \u003c\/span\u003e\u003ci\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003evin de soif\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/i\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003e.  Co-fermented Gamay (Owen’s Vineyard), Pinot Blanc (Cooper Mountain), Pinot Noir (Johan Vineyard) bottled without any sulfur additions. If you’re reading this, it’s likely you’re familiar with Kirk’s incredible taste level (on full display in July’s Direct Press), and it shows here too.  The wine is pure and bright with wild red fruit and a cool, minty, herbal tinge.
