La Kiuva is a cooperative, which in general are kind of infamous for overproducing wines, making bad wines, and incentivizing toxic agrochemicals and quantity-over-quality. However, in the case of La Kiuva and a few other cooperatives in the most rugged Italian mountain regions, this cooperative was not the result of unwieldy post-WWII government pork-barrel programs but of local farmers teaming together to help survive lean years in austere conditions. It is a cooperative in the truest sense of the word, and a world apart from the more common cantine that are often the biggest drags on a wine region's reputation and a dominating presence.
By contrast, La Kiuva is tiny collective of 60 farmers working just 15 hectares on slopes too steep to be worked with machines. The Valle d'Aosta has some of Europe's highest-elevation vines and is Italy's least populated state, situated between France and Switzerland in the shadow of Mont Blanc and the Alps.
