The Island of Giglio, situated just off the coast of Tuscany in the Tyrrhenian sea, is know more for this beautifully rugged beaches than for its wine production. Nonetheless, Francesco Carfagna has made a name for himself crafting uncompromisingly natural wines in this untamed terrain. Carfagna vineyards are located in the remote southern section of the island, and can only be reached by four wheeler.
The unique, ocean-influenced Ansonaco is an orange unlike any I have ever tasted. Over two weeks of skin contact gives the wine a beautiful bronze hue. The nose is intense, but inviting, with saffron, marzipan, preserved apricot and wildflower honey. Salted tangerine, ripe, juicy peach and a lick of mushroom funk are balanced by pronounced, but not overbearing, tannins and surprisingly refreshing acidity.
Naturally, the wine would do well with sea food, but I think it would be delicious with hot pot!
