Sage, medicinal cherry, even notes of leather that are extremely satisfying, with layers of fruit and tannin that are truly remarkable for this price. It's a wine that offers up a generosity and depth that will capture your heart. A former colleague of mine was so enamored of this wine that he got the cartoon slug on its label tattooed on his arm. Nunzio wanted to have something to pass onto his daughters and they are making very impressive wines with only three hectares of vines on the north side of Etna in a wild and harsh area. The farming is organic and only a small amount of sulfur is used in the cellar, everything else is hands-off.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTheir Carricante is an example of the lean, fine, wines that Etna can produce. This is fine-boned, tangy, and stony, where Carricante can often be quite salty and rounder. Ethereal and understated, it's almost like a more mineral, detailed version of Palomino Fino. A lovely white wine that not only reflects the challenging terrain where Nunzio and his daughters are working, but also their passion and care in the vineyards and cellar. Juicy with a lot of floral freshness, this gets balanced with more savory elements of red pepper, tarragon, rye, and pappadam. It's an irresistible combination that is as breezily pleasurable as it is engaging and versatile. After many years of working this way, his wines are not funky at all, but fine, filigreed expressions of the soils around the Neusiedlersee. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHis Blaufränkisch Kalkstein comes from limestone soils, and Claus reportedly tastes the actual limestone so that he can also make sure that the wine has the same flavor. Now that's commitment to minerality. While I certainly get the crunchy, stony thread going through the wine, it also has a delicately fruity profile, with blueberry, red plum and juicy apricot notes. It's a mouth-watering, tangy take on Blaufränkisch but doesn't veer into harshly bright territory. It's a great one to chill down and will pair with cheeseburgers, roast chicken, or a Provençal vegetable tian. Nice texture and cut on the finish. The 2019 vintage of this wine was a pandemic staple for many of our customers, and the 2020 is even better, with more dimension and balance. It has all the heart-warming, life-affirming soul of great Beaujolais. I'd say it has a little more earnest California clarity, and a little more brambly fruit underneath. The 2018 rendition of this wine is a serious showstopper - I think it is one of the best wines Brianne has ever made. Fermented in one-third new puncheon and two-thirds neutral barrels, and aged 22 months before bottling. This is serious wine, and truly recalls the reason why the Willamette Valley is mostly planted to Burgundian grape varieties. The nose is decadent, with wildflower honey, ripe pear and sea salt. It's full-bodied, but balanced, with brilliant acidity that livens the palate - packed with juicy tangerine, apricot and green apple. A super long finish with just the right amount of oak makes it very easy to enjoy. It's sourced from granitic soils in the Connor and Hodge vineyards in southern Oregon's Applegate Valley. Fermented whole-cluster and aged in neutral barrels for 12-15 months, with no additions besides a small addition of sulfur at bottling. It's bursting with fresh cranberry and raspberry and though it's 100% in-line with Ian's 'soif, American style' philosophy, it has serious balance and great layers of crunchy texture.
