Just a week or so into my first wine shop job, a customer returned a bottle of a Pic Saint-Loup because it was off. My boss diplomatically sussed out that it was too rustic for their tastes but suggested I try it. I was enthralled with it's slightly feral, rustic charms and it was possibly the gateway drug for me and natural wine. I wish I could remember the exact producer (this happened in 2007, gasp) but this wine from Cyriaque Rozier is a strong contender, as he is the winemaker at both Chateau La Roque and his personal project Chateau Fontanes, long imported by Kermit Lynch. Cyriaque ends up working 16-hour days between the two estates; working Biodynamically and taking no shortcuts surely doesn't help.

This 2016 version of his red is a real treat, as you get to experience the way his full-bodied wines are built to age, deepening in complexity and gravitas. It is a blend of 40% Syrah, 20% Grenache, 20% Mourvèdre, 10% Cinsault, 10% Carignan, grown on extremely rocky limestone soils that used to be home to olive trees. Cyriaque has to do extensive work to prevent erosion, including building stone terraces. Though he works Biodynamically these wines are not funky, just honest and transparent vehicles to express the warm climate, high elevation, and rocky terrain of Pic St Loup. It's a robust wine with beautiful, bright floral top notes poking through the layers of cherry, sage, and olive skin. Brown butter, fig, tomato umami, and stony, earthy tannins. Magali Terrier, the owner, picked this spot after relocating from her native Beaujolais for this exact reason. Black cherry, sage, wet earth and squid ink notes are complemented by tangy acids, spicy energy, and puckery tannins. Pair with braised meat, hearty pasta dishes, or roast chicken. Will age for 3-5 years easily. Fermented in open top wood vats with 20% whole cluster, aged in large old barrel. Zero sulfur added. Jonathan Kemp

Dominik Huber has elevated Priorat into a whole other level of excellence starting in the 1990s with Eben Sadie, who later moved to South Africa and makes some of the most dazzling wines there. As an outsider from Germany, Dominik helped the struggling Catalan region of Priorat reclaim pride in its old terraced vineyards and deep history. Given the ripe fruit and high potential alcohols that are typical there, Dominik quickly went against the trends of high extraction and oak aging and does more infusion and aging in concrete: the wines don't need any extra help getting jacked up. As you will taste, the wines are plenty imposing without further manipulation. A blend of Garnacha Blanca and Macabeo aged in cement, it is very waxy and opulent with notes of marzipan and chamomile. It's rich but the finish has a nice kick from some spicy ginger notes, and it lingers on the palate for a good while. It's an impressive wine that deftly works with nature to create something powerful with complexity and warm beauty. Jonathan Kemp

Press 2 • February/March 2026 Direct Press Selection

Mani di Luna is a project in the Torgiano DOC of Umbria, started in 2012 by Rocco, Alessandro, and Simone: three friends who bonded over rock music and the potential for natural agronomy to revitalize crops and soils. They work with 7.5 hectares of vines in a region where ancient Etruscans did the same. All the work is certified organic and done by hand, with a lot of biodynamic methods and preparations in use — hence the winery name Mani di Luna, aka 'Hands of the Moon.'

"La Cupa" is from a single vineyard of Sangiovese on sandstone and calcareous marl. It's foot trod in an old vertical press, then aged in a mix of old French oak and concrete for three years. Umbria, to those familiar with the wines of Paolo Bea, is a region that arguably does big tannic reds better than anywhere else. "La Cupa" is no exception, with complex layers of grippy, earthy, mouth-coating tannin that manages to be refreshing and invigorating instead of fatiguing and astringent. The bottle age on this shows with lots of dark, sagey, foresty tertiary notes. But on top are notes of black cherry, Earl Grey tea, tarragon, and a surprising mineral clarity that cuts through the core and finish of this hefty, rugged red. Bottled during a waning moon with minimal sulfur. Jonathan Kemp

Press 4 Mix/White • February/March 2026 Direct Press Selection

Sanzon (pronounced Sh-anzon in Hungarian) is a tiny 2.5 hectare winery founded by Erika Racz in the village of Erdőbénye in the heart of the Tokaj region of Hungary.
