Craig makes several passes through this vineyard during harvest season - some for acidity, some for ripeness, some for Botrytis. The resultant wine is ridiculously good, and hits all the notes that fans of Loire Valley Chenin often miss in American renditions of the grape - aromas of baked apple, hazelnut and just a little cheese rind, with notes of juicy lemon, ripe pear and honey. Her commitment to this exhaustive modality yielded amazing, highly sought after grapes, producing wines that really turned by head and blew my hair back (yes, I know I'm balding).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e2020 was a year that broke many of our collective hearts. It's was especially difficult in Oregon, where the double gut punch of the Covid-19 pandemic and unprecedented smoke from wildfires made winemaking in the Willamette Valley nearly impossible. Mimi persevered, and made some spine-tingling good white wines. The 2020 Chenin Blanc was the first vintage for wine produced from the estate's Riesling vines grafted over to the notoriously finicky variety and the results were outstanding, but when considering what the year threw at Mimi, the wines should win some damn awards.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Chenin grapes were harvested after the smoke dissipated and were pressed off skins right away, and fermented in neutral french oak. Beautifully ripe, with a nose of mandarin orange and cream. Bright, vibrant acidity lifts the medium-bodied palate up higher than I was initially expecting, creating a lightness to the power this wine has. Nectarine, fleshy pear and wildflower honey notes shine through. Nothing short of breathtaking. There is an immediate sensation of rocks and stones, and while the fruit is rich and honeyed (just barely off-dry at 3.5 grams\/liter), it is matched by a persistently strong mineral core, finishing with racy acidity and a deeply satisfying leesy crunch. It is a wine for your head but it will easily win your heart, too. I find that Chenins like this with a little sugar, just like Mosel Riesling, are one of the most age-worthy and moving white wines that exist. He references this in the name of his winery: Le Sot de l'Ange roughly translates to the 'angel fool' but this is self deprecating, to be sure. These days Quentin is as known for his uncompromising precision in the vineyards and cellar as he is for his \u003cmeta charset=\"utf-8\"\u003eintense work ethic and his love of hockey. He interned and learned from many of the best in the Loire, including famed Vouvray producer Domaine Huet. When he got an opportunity to take over some friend's vines in 2013 he jumped and never looked back. His vineyard has been certified Biodynamic for over a decade, making him an outlier in his tiny subzone of Touraine. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eALZ is a blend of Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc, and Chardonnay, and it shows off the ability of Loire wines to be simultaneously lush and cutting: this combination is stupidly delicious, in case you were wondering. The grapes come from vines that are over 40 years old, which are hand harvested, gently whole cluster pressed and gravity fed into  stainless steel tanks where the juice goes through a 3 month long native yeast fermentation. Full-bodied, bright and absolutely delicious, the nose is vibrant and alive with white flowers, almond and wild flower honey. He now has 2.5 hectares and supplements this with some purchased fruit, as is the case with this Chenin Blanc. All his farming is organic and he uses homemade teas as well as some copper and sulfur in the vineyards. Sulfur in the cellar is kept to about 10-20ppm at bottling.
