Born in Colombia, Beto was a sommelier for 15 years in Spain, Mexico and Colombia before coming to Itata to work with Roberto Henriquez. After a year, he struck out on his own, working with local farmers to preserve the ancient viticultural heritage of the area. His goal is to highlight, honor and protect these ancient vines, while simultaneously helping them to find an audience more globally. To that end, Beto does not buy vineyards, but instead works collaboratively with local farmers and their families to convert their vines to organic, regenerative, and biodynamic farming. Working this way helps improve the lives of the area’s farmers, who have historically struggled to find recognition and a market for their wines. Much of his time is spent biking between the different parcels he works with, assisting with farming and organic treatments. In the Leoncio cellar, Beto works with very limited intervention, avoiding additives and employing only native yeasts.

This wine is mostly País with small amounts of Aramon and Cinsault from multiple parcels of own-rooted 150-year-old vines around Batuco and Magdalena Alto in the Itata Valley. The La Santa pulls you in with aromas of hibiscus, black cherries, and a bit of bbq smoke. The palate is full of juicy black cherries, hibiscus, a touch of earthy minerality, and that smokey note finishes lightly among the elegant and velvety lingering length. Now, she works with three local farmers, who she has helped to convert their vineyards to chemical-free, regenerative farming practices. These methods are meant to restore the soils that have been damaged by chemical pesticides, but also to protect against wildfires and improve yields and quality.

Las Fermentadas is a project helmed by Alice L’Estrange, open to any women who would like to make natural wine collaboratively at her winery as a team. They aim to craft honest wines that showcase their diverse local terroir, which includes sandy riverbanks, decomposed granite, and iron-rich red soils. They are also dedicated to dry farming their vines, which is uncommon in their arid climate and sun-drenched terrain. They farm regeneratively and organically without certification, which is extremely cost-prohibitive in Mexico.

In 2016, Pau’s daughter, Silvana, began making her own wines under the family domain as well as her solo project, Arbol de Fuego. Silvana has a background as a classical dancer with a degree from the National School of Classic and Contemporary Dance in Mexico City. She also underwent training as a sommelier and studied with a master wine and cidermaker.

This brings us to her "Pobre Diabla" Guadalupe Red 2023, which is 80% Grenache and 20% Muscat. This is a vibrant red blend that almost presents as a white wine if you close your eyes. Aromas of herbs, a light spice note, and a hint of sumac are mixed with crayon wax, pomegranate, and mandarin orange. The palate is an invigorating and balanced mix of strawberry, spice, tar, kelp (possibly due to proximity to the ocean), and salinity. This wine has energy for days! Zero sulfur added. ~Jeremy Hernandez
